Curtis Loftis has repeatedly demonstrated a pattern of incompetence, recklessness, and a disregard for public trust, making it clear that he is unfit to continue serving as South Carolina’s State Treasurer. His failures have not only embarrassed our state but have also put billions of taxpayer dollars at risk.
In 2020, during a time of national reckoning over racial justice and public health, Treasurer Loftis chose to use his public platform to spread dangerous far-right conspiracy theories. His inflammatory comments against Black Lives Matter, along with his endorsement of debunked misinformation about microchipping, health passports, and vaccines, demonstrated an alarming lack of judgment and a disregard for facts. These actions called into question his ability to make responsible decisions as the state’s chief financial officer.
More recently, Loftis has been at the center of a staggering $1.8 billion accounting scandal that has shaken confidence in South Carolina’s financial leadership. For seven years, he failed to disclose the existence of these funds, only addressing the issue in March 2024 after mounting public scrutiny. When questioned by a Senate Finance subcommittee, he falsely testified that the $1.8 billion was “real money” and could be withdrawn immediately.
An independent audit by AlixPartners in January 2025 debunked his claims, revealing that $1.6 billion of the total amount was the result of erroneous accounting entries. This gross mismanagement has already led to impeachment proceedings initiated by State Representative Heather Bauer, as well as ongoing investigations into the Treasurer’s office. Instead of taking responsibility, Loftis has deflected blame, calling legitimate concerns a “political witch hunt” and refusing to acknowledge his own negligence.
Loftis’s actions have not only misled lawmakers and the public but have also undermined confidence in South Carolina’s financial integrity. His failure to properly account for nearly $2 billion in state funds—combined with his blatant misinformation, poor decision-making, and refusal to accept accountability—makes it evident that he is incapable of fulfilling the duties of his office.
For the financial security and reputation of South Carolina, Curtis Loftis must be removed from his position immediately. The people of this state deserve a Treasurer who values transparency, accountability, and fiscal responsibility—qualities that Loftis has repeatedly failed to uphold.
During the COVID-19 pandemic and Black Lives Matter protests, Loftis posts criticism of Black Lives Matter on Facebook, expressing support for several far-right conspiracy theories, including forced human microchipping, health passports, and toxic vaccinations.
Loftis addresses concerns about a $1.8 billion fund resulting from a statewide computer conversion, stating that the funds have always been accounted for and managed in accordance with state law.
During a Senate Finance subcommittee hearing, Loftis testifies that the $1.8 billion is “real money” and could be withdrawn immediately (it wasn't).
A Senate report accuses Loftis of failing to disclose the $1.8 billion fund for seven years, alleging a breach of public trust. Loftis responds by criticizing the report and its authors, suggesting political motivations behind the accusations.
A report by AlixPartners concludes that approximately $1.6 billion of the $1.8 billion is not actual cash but resulted from incorrect accounting entries during a system conversion.
State Representative Heather Bauer files legislation initiating impeachment proceedings against Loftis due to the accounting error.
Loftis labels calls for his resignation over the $1.8 billion accounting error as a “political witch hunt,” attributing the issue to mistakes by other agencies and retired staff members.
